QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uganda with diverse ecosystems, which include sprawling savanna, shady, humid forests, sparkling lakes and fertile wetlands, making it ideal habitant for classic big game and more primate species including chimpanzees and over 600 species of birds.  It was dubbed “a medley of wonders” due to its diverse and unique tourist attractions.

Located near Rwenzori mountains in western Uganda, the park is magnificent and visitors can view beautiful enormous craters carved dramatically into rolling green hills, panoramic views of the kazinga channel with its banks lined with hippos, buffalos and elephants and the endless, Ishasha plains whose fig trees hide lions ready to pounce on herds of unsuspecting Uganda kob.

Apart from outstanding wildlife attractions, Queen Elizabeth national park has a fascinating cultural history. There are many opportunities for visitors to meet the local communities and enjoy storytelling, dance, music and more. The park was founded in 1952 as Kazinga national park which was renamed two years later to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II of England.

The park spans the districts of Kasese, Kamwenge, Rubirizi, and Rukungiri, approximately 400km by road south-west of Kampala city, the capital of Uganda.

 

OTHER ACTIVITIES

  • Birding

The park is known internationally as an important birding area (IBA) by birding international. Queen’s great variety of habitants means it is home to over 600 bird species. This is the largest of any east African national park due to its small size. its savannah and forests connects to expansive forest of the democratic republic of Congo allowing visitors to spot species coming from different parts of Africa especially from east and central African species.

  • Cave Walk

The cave is found in the shady canopy of the maramagambo forest and is the “bat cave”. This cave gives you an opportunity to view and observe the resident bats and other mammals.

  • Chimp Tracking

The kyambura gorge is of the best places to view habitual wild chimpanzee in the natural environment. In the process, visitors will enjoy ecosystems of kyambura atmosphere “underground” in forests and the steep escarpment of the rift valley which includes vegetation types, birds, chimps and other monkey species.

  • Game Drives

The park provides magnificent African safari experience. The tracks through kasenyi, north of kazinga plains and the Ishasha sector offer virtually guaranteed buffalo, antelope and elephant sighting, along with number of warthogs and baboons. Taking an experienced guide in the early morning or in the evening is the most successful way to track down pride of lions and even leopards.

  • Launch Trip

The boat cruise on the kazinga channel being an oasis for many of the fascinating species that inhabit the park is the best for most of the visitors to the park. The boat cruise gives you a chance to view hundreds of enormous hippos, buffalos and birdlife from close meters while elephants hung around the shoreline.
